Synopsis:

Susan is the new girl -- she's sharp and driven, and strives to meet her parents' expectations of excellence. Malcolm is the bad boy -- he started raising hell at age fifteen, after his mom died of cancer, and has had a reputation ever since. Susan hasn't told anyone, but she wants to be an artist. Malcolm doesn't know what he wants -- until he meets her.

Love is messy and families are messier, but in spite of their burdens, Susan and Malcolm fall for each other. The ways they drift apart and come back together are testaments to family, culture, and being true to who you are.

Review:

**Thank you to Penguin Teen Canada for sending me an arc
of the book in return for my honest review**

Susan is the new girl in Toronto. She missed her friends and Father who are back in Saudi Arabia, and she is scared of disappointing her Mother. She struggles with the differences in Canada to her home in Saudi Arabia and wishes her Father was there to help support her and her Mother.

The Beauty of the Moment
is a beautifully written story following the struggles of a teen. Susan is a wonderful character who longs to be an artist but know it is not a career path her Mother or Father would ever accept. I really enjoyed reading from her perspective and how she views the life around her as an Indian girl having lived in Saudi Arabia and then immigrating to Canada.

Malcom is the polar opposite of Susan. While she cares about her studies and getting the highest grade, Malcom is much more laid back and learning to cope with his Mother's death, his Father's abuse and the betrayal of his ex-girlfriend.

I loved that despite being so different Susan and Malcom connected with each other and helped one another change for the better. Susan opens herself up more and becomes more care-free; while Malcom learns to confront his strained relationship with his family and the heartbreak he suffered from his ex-girlfriend.

My favourite relationship was between Susan and her Mother. I really enjoyed their closeness and how their relationship was almost that of sisters rather than Mother and daughter.

The story is told from both Susan and Malcom's points-of-view but I personally preferred Susan's perspective. I loved how she viewed the world around her and how deep of a relationship she has with her Mother.

A lot of detail went into the setting and loved being able to recognise the various locations around the Toronto area such as Square One, various stores and different bus routes.

Everything about this book fit perfectly. The writing was wonderful and I was rooting for Susan and Malcom's relationship throughout the book. Tanaz Bhathena has created a wonderful 'slice-of-life' style book, following two teenagers and their struggles with the world around them and how they learn to rely\trust in those around them.
