Synopsis:

In the walled city-state of Alu, Kammani wants nothing more than to become the accomplished healer her father used to be before her family was cast out of their privileged life in shame.

When Alu's ruler falls deathly ill, Kammani’s beautiful little sister, Nanaea, is chosen as one of three sacred maidens to join him in the afterlife. It’s an honor. A tradition. And Nanaea believes it is her chance to live an even grander life than the one that was stolen from her.

But Kammani sees the selection for what it really is—a death sentence.

Desperate to save her sister, Kammani schemes her way into the palace to heal the ruler. There she discovers more danger lurking in the sand-stone corridors than she could have ever imagined and that her own life—and heart—are at stake. But Kammani will stop at nothing to dig up the palace’s buried secrets even if it means sacrificing everything…including herself.

Review:

**Thanks to PenguinTeen Canada for sending me an arc in
return for my honest review**

This book doesn't release until October, but this is definitely one I recommend adding to your tbrs!

This book follows the main character Kammani. When her sister is chosen as one of the three sacred maidens to join Alu's ruler in the afterlife, she vows to save her. She manages to scheme her way into the palace to heal the ruler but not everything is as it seems.

This book follows a popular trope; a family member taken away and the relative trying to save them. However, I loved the world, characters and uniqueness to the major storyline. I found the topic of three sacred maidens really interesting and unique. It added a dark theme to the book and I couldn't help but think of those who may have died in the past with previous rulers.

Kammani is the main character in this story and she is a healer. She studies under her father who was once known as the best healer in the land until a mistake was made and instead people struggle to trust him. I really loved the protectiveness she had for her family. Kammani is a strong character and will stop at nothing to protect those that she loves. She sees through the sacred maiden ceremony for what it really is; a death sentence. Her character development was done wonderfully and I loved reading about her journey in finding herself and trying to save those that she loves.

All the characters were very well written. Kammani's best friend, Iltani, was a fantastic character. She's a very outgoing character and will do anything to help her friends.

The entire premise of three girls being chosen to be sacrificed when the ruler died was extremely dark. The majority of people in the land saw it as an honor and longed to be chosen. Kammani always hoped she wasn't chosen and that her family wouldn't be. Many secrets are kept within the palace walls that Kammani is determined to found out and she isn't afraid of the risks if it means she can save those around her.

Gravemaidens is a beautifully written book with compelling characters. This series is set to be a duology and I cannot wait to see where this story goes.
