Synopsis:

After being kicked out of his boarding school, 16-year-old Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham City to find that nothing is as he left it. What once was his family home is now an empty husk, lonely but haunted by the memory of his parents' murder. Selina Kyle, once the innocent girl next door, now rules over Gotham High School with a dangerous flair, aided by the class clown, Jack Napier.

When a kidnapping rattles the school, Bruce seeks answers as the dark and troubled knight--but is he actually the pawn? Nothing is ever as it seems, especially at Gotham High, where the parties and romances are of the highest stakes ... and where everyone is a suspect.

With enchanting art by Thomas Pitilli, this new graphic novel is just as intoxicating as it is chilling, in which dearest friends turn into greatest enemies--all within the hallways of Gotham High!

Review:

** This book was sent to me by the publisher in return
for my honest review **

I was recently contacted by DC Publishing, asking if I would like to review Melissa De La Cruz's upcoming graphic novel: Gotham High. I love Melissa's writing, so of course I jumped at the chance.

So first, a bit about this book. Gotham High is a new twist on the classic Batman story. In this graphic novel, Bruce Wayne is returning to Gotham City after being kicked out of his boarding school. After a kidnapping, Bruce tries his best to find out the truth but not everything goes to plan and the secrets he uncovers aren't what he was expecting.

This book starts with a look into the life of Bruce Wayne. He defends a student from a bully which goes viral leading to his expulsion from the boarding school he attends. After his parents death, his uncle (who is actual the butler Alfred in the original story) shipped him off to a boarding school while he returned to work in Hong Kong. I really enjoyed the new takes on Bruce Wayne's family, for example, his Mother is avtually from Hong Kong and is the one who started Wayne Enterprises from the money her rich family has. I think Alfred now being his Uncle was one of my favourite aspects. He returns to help Bruce with his husband in tow. He was a really fun character and I wish there had been more interactions between him and his nephew.

All the new takes on the characters I really loved. Selina (catwoman) is now half Latina and Ivy (poison ivy) is korean. The diversity was great and I loved all the new stories the characters had. The Joker in this book is Jack. I enjoyed the dynamics between Bruce, Selina and Jack. I think the book would have benfitted from having more character development. Although the basic origin stories of these characters are well known, the changes within this book had changed the characters enough that I think it would have benefited from more.

I liked the high school setting in this book. I think it was a fun take on a classic comic with enough changes to keep me hooked.

The storyline wasn't bad. It's a fairly simple storyline, a kidnapping with a mystery surrounding it, but I did enjoy it. There were some twists I wasn't expecting and overall the ending was well done. There were times I wish the storyline had been more developed. I was really enjoying reading it but I felt that it was resolved quicker than I had hoped.

The artwork in this book was stunning. I loved the art style alongside the vibrant colours really made me fall in love with this book.

Gotham High is a fun and a new take on a well-loved comic. With beautiful artwork and a new story, this is one I can see many enjoying.
