Synopsis:

Orphaned and cast out as a witch by her village, Vasya’s options are few: resign herself to life in a convent, or allow her older sister to make her a match with a Moscovite prince. Both doom her to life in a tower, cut off from the vast world she longs to explore. So instead she chooses adventure, disguising herself as a boy and riding her horse into the woods. When a battle with some bandits who have been terrorizing the countryside earns her the admiration of the Grand Prince of Moscow, she must carefully guard the secret of her gender to remain in his good graces—even as she realizes his kingdom is under threat from mysterious forces only she will be able to stop.

Review:

The Winternight books are quickly becoming my favourite fantasy trilogy. The Girl in the Tower is even better than the first book, and I'm very excited to read the third book when it releases in 2019.

The Girl in the Tower picks up right where the first book ended.  Vasya is leaving her home and is travelling to Moscow. She disguises herself as a boy, as it's unseen for a girl to travel alone, and begins her journey. She quickly learns that not everything is good in the world and that there are lot more dangers than normal on her journey to Moscow.

This book had much more action and adventure. I loved all the new additional characters. Vasya has grown a lot as a character. She is much more mature, feisty and brave. After being forced to leave her hometown due to accusations that she is a witch. She hopes to find a better future than her highborn status will give her. Her travels to Moscow put her in difficult situations and she meets new people along the way.

I really enjoyed the depth into Vasya's relationships with her siblings as well as her interactions with Morozko. I loved that the romance wasn't a main focus of the story; it was slow building and fitted into the main story perfectly.

I felt even more invested in this book than I did the first. I loved that there was more action, that it was a little more fast-paced, and the development of the different characters. The world building in this book was done beautifully, Katherine Arden describes things in great detail and I really felt like I was in the world with the characters.

Katherine Arden is a beautiful writer. Her mix of fantasy and historical fiction is interwoven within the books to create a truly fantastic book. There is magic, folklore, fantastically developed characters and a beautiful setting. After the ending of this book I cannot wait to see where the story goes in book three.
