Synopsis:

Sixteen-year-old Eva is a princess, born with the magick of marrow and blood--a dark and terrible magick that hasn't been seen for generations in the vibrant but fractured country of Myre. Its last known practitioner was Queen Raina, who toppled the native khimaer royalty and massacred thousands, including her own sister, eight generations ago, thus beginning the Rival Heir tradition. Living in Raina's long and dark shadow, Eva must now face her older sister, Isa, in a battle to the death if she hopes to ascend to the Ivory Throne--because in the Queendom of Myre only the strongest, most ruthless rulers survive.

When Eva is attacked by an assassin just weeks before the battle with her sister, she discovers there is more to the attempt on her life than meets the eye--and it isn't just her sister who wants to see her dead. As tensions escalate, Eva is forced to turn to a fey instructor of mythic proportions and a mysterious and handsome khimaer prince for help in growing her magick into something to fear. Because despite the love she still has for her sister, Eva will have to choose: Isa's death or her own.

an arc in return for my honest review**

This is an exciting upcoming debut fantasy that I read and fell in love with.

The story follows, Eva, a young princess born with magick, but a magic that is considered dark and forbidden. She has to face her older sister in a battle for the throne. However, an attack by an assassin leads to her discovering that there is a lot more going on than she believes.

Eva is a strong character, having to hide her magick from a world that believes it is evil. Not only is she dealing with hiding it from the world around her, but she also has to prepare herself for the battle against her sister for the throne. Throughout the story she throws aside the love and affection that her mother and others around her show her due to the secrecy of her magick. Yet, as the story progresses she slowly gains confidence and strength.

The other supporting characters were also fantastic. I particularly liked Baccha, his sarcasm, and the slow friendship that builds between him and Eva.

Isadore is Eva's sister who we learn more about through various flashbacks. I loved how her story developed and that by the end of the book we learn the true reason that Isadore is the way she is. I would have liked to have read more interactions between the two sisters which I think would have helped better understand Eva's relationship with her sister.

I enjoyed the romance in this story. Instead of whom I expected Eva to fall for she fell for someone else. I don't want to spoil who it is, but I really enjoyed their developing relationship and interactions with one another throughout the book.

The writing is very descriptive. The way the landscapes were described was beautifully written and I fell in love with the world. A lot of the scenes had strong emotions running through them and I really felt the tension of what was happening. I never saw the storyline unfolding the way it did and I loved how the secrets came to truth.

Amanda Joy has created a fantastic story. A River of Royal Blood is a book driven by political intrigue and family secrets. I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to see where the next book takes the story.
