Synopsis:

It has been a year since the mysterious godsgem cured Cadrium’s king and ushered in what promised to be a new golden age. The heroes who brought the gem home are renowned in story and song, but for two fellows on the quest, peace and prosperity do not come easily.

Apprentice Knight Kalanthe Ironheart wasn't meant for heroism this early in life, and while she has no intention of giving up the notoriety she has earned, her reputation does not pay her bills. With time running out, Kalanthe may be forced to betray not her kingdom or her friends, but her own heart as she seeks a stable future for herself and those she loves.

Olsa Rhets daughter was never meant for heroism at all. Beggar, pick pocket, thief, she lived hand to mouth on the city streets until fortune--or fate--pulled her into Kalanthe's orbit. And now she's quite reluctant to leave it. Even more alarmingly, her fame has made her recognizable, which makes her profession difficult, and a choice between poverty and the noose isn't much of a choice at all.

Both girls think their paths are laid out, but the godsgem isn't quite done with them and that new golden age isn’t a sure thing yet.

In a tale both sweepingly epic and intensely personal, Kalanthe and Olsa fight to maintain their newfound independence and to find their way back to each other.

Review:

**Thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for sending me
an arc in return for my honest review**

E.K Johnston
is one of my all-time favourite authors. I was very excited to receive an arc in the mail and I couldn't wait to start reading it.

The Afterward is a high fantasy novel with female romance intermixed. We follow Kalanthe and Osla getting a look into their lives before their quest as well as their lives after their quest is complete.

I loved both Kalanthe and Osla in this novel. Both characters were wonderfully written and well developed. Nothing was simple after their quest had ended. Despite having fallen in love during the quest, they are at odds during the aftermath.

Kalanthe is worrying about how she will pay her debts after becoming a knight- with marriage being one option. However, she dreads this option because of her love for Osla. Osla, on the other hand, has gone back to her thieving ways; however due to her being so well known she is often arrested. Kalanthe comes to her rescue and vouches for her. The story switches between their perspectives and I loved how beautifully their love was written and how their relationship developed throughout the novel.

There were many other amazing diverse characters in this novel; although the main focus was on Kalanthe and Osla. All of the characters felt wonderfully unique and well developed. They were stubborn, determined and had great strength. I loved them all and I loved that the novel primarily featured a female cast.

The Afterward had an intriguing plot that had me hooked. E.K Johnston is a fantastic writer and she has created a beautiful story with an amazing cast of characters. This was one of my most anticipated books of the year and it didn't disappoint. This is yet another book of E.K Johnston's that I've fallen in love with and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next.
